: Codetermination and integration

In 2015, 1.1 million refugees arrived in Germany. Despite this massive challenge Germany can still succeed as a country of immigration if it manages to integrate people via employment. For refugees, however, the road to employment is protracted and fraught with obstacles. The present report shows how codetermination, experienced as living democracy in the workplace, together with in-firm training, which companies in Germany have traditionally regarded as their social responsibility, constitute a potent force for integration. Particular attention must be paid to these key factors in the broad public debate and policy-makers must make appropriate resources available.
