Debate on Financial Crisis
President Horst Köhler is ascribing a "powerful role" to the DGB - in overcoming the crisis in the financial markets and holding society together. "I am convinced that you, the DGB, the unions, are needed. Stay strong, able to both fight and make compromises, but keeping the general good in mind", Horst Köhler says at the celebration 60 years of DGB in Berlin.

Social Europe and the ECJ judgements
Questions about "Social Europe" are also questions about industrial relations in Europe. With decisions like Viking, Laval and Rüffert trade union rights have been curtailed and the European Court of Justice (ECJ) has become a political player in constitutional terms. Trade Unions have to reconsider their previous reticent attitude to ECJ court cases, European legal expert Florian Rödl says.

European Works Councils´ role
On the one hand Antje Orentat (Center), as chair of the European Works Council (EWC) of British Airways, won a case in the Brussels labour court and was delighted. On the other hand she had to put up with repeatet personal attacks from her employer BA. She will surely never forget the last two years, with all the ups and downs.

Employee participation in the European Companies (SE and SPE)
"The transformation into an SE has been of more use to us than the management", GfK Works council member Dieter Wilbois says. Organised jointly by the ETUI, the Böckler Foundation and the Chamber of Labour in Vienna, almost 90 trade union and employee representatives, together with academics from across Europe, spent two days exchanging their experiences with this new legal form.

Fritz Hofmann is one of the architects of the BASF employee network in South America. Having started as a left-wing solidarity group it has become after years an institution within the world's biggest chemical company BASF - the Dialogo Social America do Sul. Recently the employee network in South America celebrated its 10th anniversary.
